The Alzheimer's Umbrella Network Program, of the Barrié Foundation and FAGAL, awarded at the XXI Ciudadanos Awards


The Alzheimer's Umbrella Network Program , launched in 2013 by the Federation Alzheimer Galicia and the Barrié Foundation, has been awarded in the XXI Edition of the CIUDADANOS Awards.

These Awards, organized by the non-profit association of the same name, aim to recognize those projects that extol the virtues of solidarity and civic values, as well as sensitize society to the need and importance of values ​​such as effort, dedication and commitment to citizens.

The Alzheimer's Umbrella Network Program, which shares a prize with such outstanding organizations as the CERMI or the COE, has been recognized on this occasion for providing quality training to caregivers and family members of people with Alzheimer's disease in rural Galicia.

This award was delivered yesterday at the Ateneo de Madrid Assembly Hall. José Manuel Fontenla, member of the Board of Directors of the Federation Alzheimer Galicia, was commissioned to collect the award on behalf of both entities.

Alzheimer's Umbrella Network Program

In 2013, the Barrié Foundation and the Federation Alzhéimer Galicia launched this project with the aim of supporting families of people with Alzheimer's disease in rural Galicia, providing care and direct support to caregivers and establishing memory units for families. affected people.

Thus, during the last 4 years, 39 informative talks from the health, social and psychological point of view have been carried out in the rural areas of Galicia, in which more than 1,000 attendees participated and after which it was possible to create a stable group of relatives to participate in later activities. In addition, 10 training cycles were carried out with a participation of 200 people where dementias were addressed from different areas, with the aim of providing family members with guidelines for action in the different stages of the disease.

On the other hand, 5 memory units were created for people with dementia and where intervention workshops were held based on cognitive stimulation techniques, activities of daily life or music therapy, among others. .

In addition, between the year 2015 and 2016, 11 rural social care units were opened, which allowed serving 276 families, and which materialized in 6 collaboration agreements between the municipalities of those counties and the associations of relatives of people with Alzheimer's and other dementias in that area.

At the beginning of this year, the Federation Alzheimer Galicia and the Barrié Foundation renewed their collaboration agreement to start the third part of the Alzheimer's Umbrella Network Program, with which new respite units for people with Alzheimer's disease and care have already been launched. to families carers.
