Concept of dementia

Dementia is a decline in intellectual ability compared to their previous level of function. Usually , this reduction is accompanied by psychological and behavioral changes and results in impaired social and occupational abilities of sufferers.

Dementia is not a disease but a group specifically related to a decline in mental abilities (memory, language, judgment, calculation, abstraction, emotions and personality characteristics) symptoms. Therefore, we can say that dementia is a "syndrome” (a set of symptoms and signs).


  • Intellectual loss compared to their previous level of function.
