Dementia in numbers

People with dementia 

There are nearly 70,500 people with Alzheimer’s or any other type of dementia in Galicia. Dementia affects 12,5% of people over 65 years old and 31,25% of people over 85 years old.

Alzheimer’s disease is the first cause of dementia. In the last few years, it has been high on the health care agenda. That is why it is so important to make a single action plan to treat and deal with the disease.

The caregiver 

  • Statistics show that one single main caregiver puts around 60 hours per week in the task of taking care (9 hours in men’s case and 12 hours in women's case).
  • 82% of working age female caregivers go from 19 to 65 years old. The average age of a caregiver is 46 years old.
  • Most male caregivers are retired men and 35% of them balance their task as caregivers with a paid job.
  • 40% of caregivers acknowledge having money problems resulting from their care task.
  • 27% of caregivers think their professional career suffered and an 11% had to quit their jobs.
  • In 13% of the cases, some family members had to quit their full-time or part-time jobs or education to help the main caregiver.
  • 60% of caregivers take prescription drugs or get some type of physiotherapy rehabilitation services as a consequence of their care tasks.
