On February 20th, World Day of Social Justice, Federación Alzhéimer Galicia attended the conference “How to fight against aporophobia, hatred and misinformation from Public Administrations and NGOs?” organized by EAPN Galicia and held at the Escuela Gallega de Administración Pública (Galician School of Public Administration). Apart from being at the conference, FAGAL also collaborated in the social media campaign under the hashtag #ContrAporafobia.
The conference was aimed at autonomic and local staff from Public Administrations in Galicia and workers and volunteers at social and cooperative organizations. The purpose was avoiding and preventing situations of discrimination and aporophobia because of prejudices that can occur in the Administration. This conference looked for ethical commitment with the rights of people who are in situation of poverty and/or social exclusion. Further discussion included available resources to support victims, seven offices standing out in courthouses from A Coruña, Santiago, Ferrol, Lugo, Ourense, Pontevedra and Vigo.
The day started with a brief welcome and an institutional act, followed by presentations by Sara Mesa (author of the book Administrative Silence), Natalia Monje (CibeRespect Program) and María Paz Gutiérrez (Galician coordinator of NGDO), amongst other professionals. In addition, a round table took place, with Ana Escrigas (Mental Health - FEAFES Galicia), Alba Iglesias (federation Down Galicia) and Irene Jiménez (Fundación Secretariado Gitano - Foundation for the Gypsy Secretariat), under the title “Different groups, same discrimination. Reporting advocacy for social rights.”
Federación Alzhéimer Galicia, apart from attending this conference, joined the movement #ContrAporofobia carried out on social media. The purpose of this campaign was breaking the stereotypes on people in situation of social exclusion. To do this, member organizations and federation of EAPN Galicia put their characteristics aside and looked for a common cause, making publications which wanted to dismantle these beliefs.
