FAGAL's history
Federación Alzhéimer Galicia turned 20 in 2018. 20 years going through different necessary paths to keep memory alive as long as possible. 20 years growing as an entity until reaching the position of being an example for dementia care. As rightly said by its motto: “20 years creating paths, creating memories.”
FAGAL’s life started in 1998 when four associations for family members of people with Alzheimer’s disease decided to get together. AGADEA, ACOSTUMBRE, AFACO and AFAOR. In the early years, new organizations from different places in Galicia joined in (AFAMO, AFAL Ferrolterra, AFAMON, AFALU, AFABER, AFAPO and AFACHANTADA), making a total of 10 organizations by the time the federation turned 10.
In 2010 and 2011 AFAVI and AFASAL joined in.
Throughout these 20 years, the associative Alzheimer sector in Galicia reached great achievements that translated into better care for people with Alzheimer’s disease or any other neurodegenerative dementias, and better training for socio-sanitary professionals and caregivers. 20 years to defend the rights of people with Alzheimer’s and their families, along with our associations.
